Freelance Writer

Twice a semifinalist in the Ralph Nading Hill contest and a semifinalist for Amazon's Breakthrough Novel Award, Mark Aiken was a two-time recipient of the Albee Award honoring the best writing in the University of Vermont's English Department.  Now he freelance writes year-round.  An avid skier, he supervises in Stowe's Ski & Ride School while writing for national and local magazines and maintaining two blogs.  He is at work on a novel.

A graduate of the University of Vermont, Mark wanted to take a year off before getting a real job.  Packing everything he owned in his car (leaving it pretty much empty), he eventually landed in Flagstaff, Arizona where his "year" lasted seven years.

By the time he moved back to New England in 1999, he had established himself in a range of outdoor recreational professions (ski instructor, outdoor educator, environmental educator, raft guide, backpacking leader, and wilderness guide) in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Germany.

A part-time job in an independent bookstore and the resulting contact with authors and writers sparked Mark’s interest in publishing. He began freelancing in 1998 – as a hobby.  Since returning to his home state, the hobby became a passion and then a career. Now he lives with his wife and does what he loves near the banks of the Winooski River and in the shadow of Vermont's Green Mountains.
